Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour
A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a severe and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two neighbouring properties, elevated above the yard, began to seep into the property and undermine the house’s foundation. This unwanted intrusion led to damage to the flooring, increased rising damp, and promoted mould growth within the residence, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

What Methods Can You Use to Detect the Source of Water Ingress?
The water ingress issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the back and side yards of neighbouring properties. In the absence of a comprehensive drainage system to intercept this influx, the water was forced to flow beneath the house.
Developing an Effective Drainage Solution
CS Plumbing designed and installed a gravity-fed French drain system specifically engineered to capture and redirect water before it could reach the foundation of the home.
The project incorporated several crucial elements:
- A French drain system meticulously crafted to collect surface and subsurface water from adjacent properties, channeling it through gravity to a concrete pit.
- A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, equipped with strategically drilled holes to facilitate efficient discharge.
- Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the existing smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
- A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator to create a robust barrier against the adjacent yard.
- Prompt soil removal on-site, aided by a dumper to enhance site management efficiency.
What Measures Can You Implement for Effective Water Management?
The newly established drainage system now effectively captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring that it is redirected away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a durable, low-maintenance alternative that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
